INTERVIEW SESSION WITH INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Our group have been done a interview with two international student from china and nigeria. we choose one female and one is a male because we want to find out the difference perspective from them.

EDUCATION: BEFORE>>Degree in Business Management in China University

         NOW>> Degree in International Economics (UNIMAS)

COLLEGE :Allamanda

ABOUT CANNA

            Liyingxian or we called her Canna is a passionate student that born in China. She was 25 years old and this is her third years in UNIMAS.  Before coming to UNIMAS, she already was taking degree in Business Management in her country. This is her second degree. She chooses to take another degree but a different programmed instead of taking master because she felt that it will gain a lot of experiences.

HOW SHE KNOWS ABOUT UNIMAS

            Canna knows about UNIMAS when they came to do a promotion in her University. She was attract to Malaysia University especially UNIMAS because their fees is 2 times cheaper than her university. Hence, she searches about UNIMAS on the internet. Then she found out that UNIMAS system should fit her because all the learning system is using English Language. Its make her felt that she should go to continue her study in UNIMAS.

BARRIERS THAT SHE FACED IN UNIMAS

She came to Malaysia on 2008 and stay at Pulau Pinang to study English to prepare herself before going to UNIMAS for 4 months.  On 2009,she was registered to UNIMAS as an International Economics student and her first year here is quite a bit challenging for her. She was the first foreign student that study in UNIMAS and there was no guidance for her. This situation make she faced Language barriers when all the sign boards are mostly in Malay and also communication between students is not going to well. Moreover, the system of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak is totally different from her old University. For instance, attendance is compulsory in UNIMAS but her ex-University, it is up for their student to come or not. Furthermore, they only speak Chinese Language rather than English as their daily communication.

WHICH ONE BETTER? OWN COUNTRY OR STUDY ABROAD

For Canna, study abroad is much better because she can meet more people as well as feeling a different culture in different country.  Other than that, she also can improve her English language when adventuring.

WHY CHOOSE UNIMAS

She choosing UNIMAS because she loves Sarawak that for her is clean and mostly, it is a peace country. Besides that, Sarawak has a lot of beautiful sea and forest and also has a warm weather rather than China that are mostly cold in a year. Canna likes the UNIMAS library the most because it has a lot of references book as well as known as the biggest library in Asia.

GENERAL EXPERIENCES IN MALAYSIA

She has been to many places in Malaysia such as Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and also around Sarawak. From her observation, Malaysia is one of the best in the world. She loves going to Malacca the most because it has many beautiful and also historical places to go. She also loves Malaysian food such as Mango stein, “Kek Lapis Sarawak”, “TehTarik” and mostly “ABC” or we called it “Air BatuCampur”. She also loved Old Town Coffee in Malaysia. She also said Malaysian people is a warm welcoming person, friendly as well as  showing a nice attitude to each other. She is a person that love to traveling. In Sarawak itself, she has been climbing the Santubongmountain, going to Miri, Kubah, wind cave and also the cultural house of Sarawak.

She has been to a lot of place in Malaysia. It shows that she love an adventuring activity and also visiting many places. She knows that studying abroad is not easy for her but she deciding to continue her ambition no matter what happened. Our hopes is she will be success no matter what is going through and remember that challenges make us more motivated to do something.

Why UNIMAS?

He start study at UNIMAS on September 2011, it’s been already 2 ½ month he here. He starts study at UNIMAS when Bouston Collage sent him here. Before he start become a student at UNIMAS, he study at Bouston Collage at Kuala Lumpur on August but only 15 days. He said that system at Bouston Collage not very satisfy, attendance at Bouston Collage not compulsory that why he change his mind and decided to go to Unimas.

Difficulties study in UNIMAS

Language. Hard to understand the subject in class or doing assignment because of language. But still not all the classes he hard to understand, some of class the lecturer will ask permission to speak in Bahasa Melayu. William believes that he can face the entire problem in here. He has a friends help him and he say “we must not expect that when we studying abroad, everything will be set and comfortable for us”.

Which one is better? Study in abroad or in own country?

For William, everywhere is still same. Every place has its own privileges. William say, if study at his own country he will be free to do anything because it is his hometown and he is familiar with it. And if studying abroad, he will gain a lot of experiences and he can travelling to a lot of places such as United Kingdom, Paris and this time he try to discovers about Malaysia.

Why you choose Malaysia?

Malaysia is not much different from his hometown such as the weather because Nigeria also faced hot weather. So it will make him easier to stay here. And his father said that Malaysia education system is one of the best in the world. When he get the offer, he searches about Malaysia in the internet and he saw that Malaysia has so many beautiful places, it is known as a peaceful country and also variety of cultures. It attracted him to go here. When William arrived at Malaysia, he saw the community at this country were very nice although he came from Nigeria.

General experiences in Malaysia

He already go to Kuala Lumpur and Kuching,Sarawak. He just arrived here and don’t have time to walk around Kuching. But he love to see Kuching and have planned it with his friends. William likes to eat Nasi Goreng Kampung and also Pizza Hut. He said that pizza at pizza hut is different with his own country. He doesn’t like to eat durian because of the smell.

He stays at Allamanda Collage and walk to go class. He love environment at UNIMAS, especially at Unimas Lake. He likes to jog and walking at evening if he has free time.
